The burgeoning J Class of super yachts has grown by one more. Holland Jachtbouw recently launched the  Rainbow at its yard in the Netherlands.

Based upon the lines of the original Americas Cup winner in 1934, this spectacular 40-metre J features a high-end superyacht interior and a unique hybrid propulsion and power system inside a racing boat hull, all topped off by a grand prix racing deck and rig.

Rainbow is currently being stepped and sea trials will commence in March as she gears up to complete in this summer’s regattas, including the [J-class races in England.](http://www.jclassyachts.com/events.html)

For her launch Rainbow was brought outside the ultra-modern main construction hall at Holland Jachtbouw, wheeled onto a barge and lifted by two cranes into the water. This sophisticated operation took full advantage of the yards rare capacity to launch vessels with a draught of five meters (Holland Jachtbouw can actually accommodate yachts of up to 5.5 meters draft and 65 meters in length).

"It is such a thrill to be able to fully appreciate a design that was last seen in the open almost 80 years ago," says the yards co-director Tako van Ineveld. "This new Rainbow took us over two years to build while her predecessor was completed in just a 100 days. This does not mean we are slower. It is a reflection of the incredible degree of sophistication that is now contained within these timeless lines. The original Rainbow was an empty boat with a deck of sailing gear and a powerful aluminum rig. This Rainbow is a different proposition altogether."

**The Rainbow Team - A Modern Take**  
The projects naval architects were Dykstra & Partners, and this office also partnered with deVosdeVries design on the interior.  The original Rainbow was drawn by William Starling Burgess in the early 1930s and the vessel was scrapped in 1940.  This design has now been incorporated into an all-aluminum yacht that meets the J-class Association maximum performance rules.

All modern functional requirements have been integrated with full respect for Rainbow's heritage, while the decks have been kept as clean and flush as possible featuring only a mahogany doghouse and skylight.  The latter offers a quite spectacular contrast with the superb jet black-colored hull and gold-leaf cove stripe.

Gerry Dijkstra and his team have utilized all their vast experience and the very latest computer modeling to optimize Rainbows performance via a lightweight construction with a high degree of overall stiffness. The rig includes a Southern Spars high-modulus carbon mast, boom and spinnaker pole, continuous carbon fiber rigging, North Sails 3Di racing sails and Lewmar high-speed hydraulic winches.

All are entirely customized to Rainbow's specific requirements and, like everything metallic on deck, anodized to create a light grey look.

**Complete Interior**  
All the new generation of Js need to have a fully functioning interior under JCA rules, and Rainbow's owner has spared no expense when it comes to luxury accommodation and premium equipment, including full air conditioning.

The original Rainbow did not have an engine room so there was obviously not a great deal of space to accommodate one within the lines plan.  Holland Jachtbouws solution, developed in partnership with WhisperPower, has been to create an ingenious ‘hybrid propulsion’ and power system especially for this project.

As a result, Rainbow can be operated entirely on her Hy-Store Li-ion batteries, including sailing, navigation and hotel load.  This also meets the owner’s request for silent periods onboard, without generators running, from 11 pm to 7 am.  And that in turn promises much for those who enjoy cruising and, potentially, chartering Rainbow.

**Power Inside**  
This hybrid solution replaces the conventional main engine and two generator configuration found on other Js, which have a larger engine room than the comparatively lighter Rainbow (170 tonnes). The main engine replaces the second generator, while the remaining generator is a variable speed electric unit.

The main engine generator can also act as an electric motor that can also run the propeller.  This solution is smaller in size and saves on fuel.  The batteries can also be charged while sailing without losing more than 1.5 knots of speed.

Other key overall benefits of this innovative propulsion solution include a dramatic reduction of the ecological footprint, a 30 percent reduction in the fuel required to generate the hotel load, and a similar reduction in the maintenance costs for the power plant in hotel load.

Redundancy is built-in with five power sources available: The hybrid battery, the variable speed generator, the variable speed engine generator, the shaft generator (when sailing) and shore power (when available).  There is also a substantial reduction in audible noise levels both inside the yacht and out.

**Comfort & Style**  
In terms of styling, Rainbow's interior features raised and fielded mahogany paneling with art deco details.  The owner’s stateroom is aft and there are two ensuite twin guest cabins, each with a Pullman berth.

In addition to offering accommodation to up to eight guests, Rainbow will have a permanent crew of seven led by Captain Nick Haley who has previously skippered two other members of the Holland Jachtbouw fleet, namely Windrose of Amsterdam and Athos.

**Spring Training**  
This April a team of race professionals will join the permanent crew for the first time to embark on seven days of extensive training in the North Sea.  All will look very impressive thanks to a sponsorship agreement with Pelle Petterson.

This renowned competition yachtsman has taken a keen interest in the Rainbow project and offered to supply his trademark Pelle P technical sailing clothes. During the J-class regattas in Falmouth and Cowes, Rainbow will be accompanied by a support vessel to accommodate the larger crew at night.

Rainbow also has a full schedule of engagements to compete in the other major regattas of 2012.  The general public will be able to admire her at the Monaco show where Rainbow will be on display close to the Holland Jachtbouw stand.

Exterior styling and interior design will be by Spirit Yachts with naval architecture and engineering by Sparkman & Stephens. The boat will be named 'Cheveyo' (pronounced shu-Vay-o), a native American word meaning 'spirit warrior' and will carry sail number J1.

![J class2](/images/6a00e54f072fc388340168e8ca72d9970c-800wi.jpg 'J class2')While the 1937 J-class Ranger design utilized lines 77C because it was found to have the best potential for racing in the sheltered waters off Newport, Rhode Island, Cheveyo will be built using the Ranger 77B hull design for the more exposed conditions of today's classic regattas.

In 1936, an original series of six hull designs was submitted by Starling Burgess and Sparkman & Stephens to Harold Vanderbilt for the 1937 America's Cup defense. Each of the six Ranger designs was extensively tank tested by Burgess and S&S to select the optimum hull-form to defend the America's Cup against the challenger Endeavour II, designed by Charles Nicholson. The 'Super J' Ranger was thus born, and went on to triumph decisively over Endeavour II in the 1937 series.

**A Continuing Partnership**  
“The yacht is reminiscent of the historic America’s Cup competition between England and the United States," said Kevin Felix, Chairman of Spirit Yachts.

"From design through construction to eventual competition with her peers, CHEVEYO will espouse this history. Imagine: US sailors commissioning a British company to build a classic yacht from designs by an American firm that were originally created to compete against England in the America’s Cup – that is an impressive and somewhat ironic dynamic.”

Furthering the irony is that Spirit Yachts announced the partnership at the same time President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron were doing a joint press conference in Washington in which both praised the partnership between the U.S. and Britain.

Bruce Johnson President and Chief Designer Sparkman & Stephens added that it was his hope that the boat will be participating in upcoming J-Class Regattas created especially for this re-energized racing design.

**Modern & Classic**  
Cheveyo will marry the classic design of yachting's golden era with modern build techniques of the 21st century. Spirit Yachts will use sophisticated wood/epoxy construction mated to laser cut stainless steel ring frames to create an exceptionally stiff yet lightweight hull.

On deck, this new 'Super-J' will remain true to the beauty and grace of the original design. The authentic low-profile deckhouse has been retained, resulting in a clean, unobstructed working deck.

Complementing this will be high-modulus carbon spars, carbon rigging, state-of-the-art sails and all the modern sophistication of a contemporary performance yacht that will allow her to be raced competitively against any modern yacht and, most importantly, in the spectacular growing J-Class fleet. Authenticity continues below deck with a beautiful 1930's-inspired interior.

The final day of the J Class Regatta in Newport, RI, had Velsheda playing for pride and she in fact finished strong to claim her point. It was her only win in the five-race match which Ranger took, four races to one.

The Sunday race started on a downwind leg that immediately cast some drama into the race when Ranger's spinnaker ripped to pieces shortly after being deployed. The crew quickly replaced the 10,000 s.f. sail, but it gave valuable space to Velsheda which she maintained throughout the day.

Just 28 seconds separated the two super yachts, Ranger and Velsheda after the first two days of J Class racing at Newport June 15 and 16, with 3 races still to go. Ranger had eeked out a 1 second win the first day on corrected time, but had more breathing space the next day.

After the conclusion of every race, though, the crews of 35+ men and women on each boat have the large task of putting their mega-yacht to bed for the night. As these photos show, large is the operative word with everything from flags to fenders to rigging inspection set upon an amplified stage.

Here are our first selects of photos from the [J Class Regatta](http://www.jclassregattanewport.com/) held in Newport June 15 thru Sunday June 19. The white hulled Ranger won over the dark-blue Velsheda in what was a match race 4 races to one. But the results were not the real story.

The J Class Association recently announced its plans for a series of spectacular regattas in England during 2012--the Olympic Year. It will be the first time in history that more than four of these imposing yachts will race together in a fleet.

The first regatta will be based in Falmouth, Cornwall, hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. Races will be held in the bay and along the coastline.

David Pitman said, “The J Class Association chose Falmouth as a UK base for its first 2012 regatta because of the great deep water bay, onshore support services and support from an experienced local Club--the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. The waters around the bay offer the opportunity of great courses for both the competitors and spectators, who can view from the many headlands.

“Spectators in Falmouth will be the first in the UK to view this wonderful fleet. Around eight J Class yachts, each 140 feet in length, weighing around 200 tons and with a crew of up to thirty are expecting to be ready and prepared for racing in June 2012.

"Enthusiasts from around the world will be coming to Falmouth to view the yachts and watch the racing, which will be reported live around the world. This will be a yachting event not to be missed!”

Three J Class yachts--RANGER, VELSHEDA  and SHAMROCK V--have announced that they will compete in the J Class Regatta in Newport next month. The event for these massive, classic yachts, will be the first competitive J Class regatta for three yachts in the USA since the America's Cup event of 1937 between the Defender Ranger and the Challenger Endeavour II.

The J Class Association will manage the US-based event, where the yachts will be based from Newport Shipyard. Courses will be set from the point at Fort Adams and held around the inner bay, allowing for shoreline spectators to benefit from this first event to be sailed under JCA rules.

The J Class Newport Regatta is the first of a series of global J Class events which will cultimate in the Hundred Guinea Cup race in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 2012.

The J Class yachts under sail are a sight not to be missed. No other class requires a crew of 30-plus experienced sailors to manage more than 10,000 square feet of sail driving a 200-ton hull at 16 knots around the course.

Newport was the venue for the start of the remarkable J Class era which began in 1930. Over the next seven years just 10 of these stunning yachts constructed for the purpose of winning the America’s Cup. Shamrock V and Velsheda--two of the original 10 yachts--will participate in Newport, together with Ranger, a true replica of the original. Negotiations to bring the other new J yachts to Newport are continuing.

Sail Newport and the J Class Association are responsible for the on water race management of the regatta. The yachts and their teams will be based at the Newport Shipyard with crews staying at the Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina.

The regatta series of five races will run from June 15th to 19th, 2011 with starts and finishes off of Fort Adams. Viewing stands will be set up on the Northwestern corner of Fort Adams and other excellent viewing options will be at Castle Hill Inn and various spots in Jamestown. Working with the US Coast Guard, Sail Newport will establish safe water viewing areas along the entire course.
