Martha's Vineyard got hit with 5-7 inches last night, adding to what was already on the ground. Meanwhile, work continues in the sheds and boatyard at Gannon & Benjamin on Beach Rd. Can't wait for spring and new boat launchings!

Boat builder Ted Box is getting closer to moving day for his all-wood scow Seeker that he is building on Beach Road in Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard. _(See links to earlier posts about Seeker at the end of this post.)_

Asked to vacate the property he and his still-unfinished creation have occupied for more than two years, he is getting the boat ready to move via water to a new location on property owned by Packer Oil a half mile down the road.

As his vision moves closer to reality, Box has found it easier to get people to see his vision. Packer is donating the land the scow will sit on until launch day and the I beams that will lift the boat off the Vineyard Haven sand enabling it to move to its new location will be donated as well.

Box says that he and volunteers have already poste between 8,000 and 9,000 man-hours constructing the vesseal which Box sees as a learning laboratory for kids and a tourist attraction for adults.

The final day of the J Class Regatta in Newport, RI, had Velsheda playing for pride and she in fact finished strong to claim her point. It was her only win in the five-race match which Ranger took, four races to one.

The Sunday race started on a downwind leg that immediately cast some drama into the race when Ranger's spinnaker ripped to pieces shortly after being deployed. The crew quickly replaced the 10,000 s.f. sail, but it gave valuable space to Velsheda which she maintained throughout the day.

Just 28 seconds separated the two super yachts, Ranger and Velsheda after the first two days of J Class racing at Newport June 15 and 16, with 3 races still to go. Ranger had eeked out a 1 second win the first day on corrected time, but had more breathing space the next day.

After the conclusion of every race, though, the crews of 35+ men and women on each boat have the large task of putting their mega-yacht to bed for the night. As these photos show, large is the operative word with everything from flags to fenders to rigging inspection set upon an amplified stage.

The J Class Association recently announced its plans for a series of spectacular regattas in England during 2012--the Olympic Year. It will be the first time in history that more than four of these imposing yachts will race together in a fleet.

The first regatta will be based in Falmouth, Cornwall, hosted by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. Races will be held in the bay and along the coastline.

David Pitman said, “The J Class Association chose Falmouth as a UK base for its first 2012 regatta because of the great deep water bay, onshore support services and support from an experienced local Club--the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. The waters around the bay offer the opportunity of great courses for both the competitors and spectators, who can view from the many headlands.

“Spectators in Falmouth will be the first in the UK to view this wonderful fleet. Around eight J Class yachts, each 140 feet in length, weighing around 200 tons and with a crew of up to thirty are expecting to be ready and prepared for racing in June 2012.

"Enthusiasts from around the world will be coming to Falmouth to view the yachts and watch the racing, which will be reported live around the world. This will be a yachting event not to be missed!”

U.S. fans of the J Class can get a preview of the exciting action next month at the [J Class Regatta](http://www.jclassnewportregatta.com/) in Newport, RI, June 15-19.

Three J Class yachts--RANGER, VELSHEDA  and SHAMROCK V--have announced that they will compete in the J Class Regatta in Newport next month. The event for these massive, classic yachts, will be the first competitive J Class regatta for three yachts in the USA since the America's Cup event of 1937 between the Defender Ranger and the Challenger Endeavour II.

The J Class Association will manage the US-based event, where the yachts will be based from Newport Shipyard. Courses will be set from the point at Fort Adams and held around the inner bay, allowing for shoreline spectators to benefit from this first event to be sailed under JCA rules.

The J Class Newport Regatta is the first of a series of global J Class events which will cultimate in the Hundred Guinea Cup race in Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 2012.

The J Class yachts under sail are a sight not to be missed. No other class requires a crew of 30-plus experienced sailors to manage more than 10,000 square feet of sail driving a 200-ton hull at 16 knots around the course.

Newport was the venue for the start of the remarkable J Class era which began in 1930. Over the next seven years just 10 of these stunning yachts constructed for the purpose of winning the America’s Cup. Shamrock V and Velsheda--two of the original 10 yachts--will participate in Newport, together with Ranger, a true replica of the original. Negotiations to bring the other new J yachts to Newport are continuing.

Sail Newport and the J Class Association are responsible for the on water race management of the regatta. The yachts and their teams will be based at the Newport Shipyard with crews staying at the Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina.

The regatta series of five races will run from June 15th to 19th, 2011 with starts and finishes off of Fort Adams. Viewing stands will be set up on the Northwestern corner of Fort Adams and other excellent viewing options will be at Castle Hill Inn and various spots in Jamestown. Working with the US Coast Guard, Sail Newport will establish safe water viewing areas along the entire course. The classic is now being offered for $175,000--30 percent less than its original asking price of $250,000. The price was first lowered 20 percent just a week after it went on the market in March and has now been reduced by another 10 percent.

Avanti is out of the water and sitting on the front lawn. An active summer (17 races in Holmes Hole alone) brought about dings, a grounding and other adventures. With the weather still good, my friend Chris gets to work repairing the rub rail which has to be replaced. First he takes off what's left of the old rail, cleans the surface and fills the holes left by old screws.

The day of recokoning--launch day--is drawing closer for [The Arctic Tern Project](http://members.shaw.ca/pgron/ArcticTern.htm), a DIY boat building project begun in 2004 by Peter Gron of Gabriola Island, BC, Canada.

Sail dreams turned into boards and beams when Gron erected a boat shed in the autumn of 2004 and started building his now gleaming 23' Arctic Tern sloop. Here are two recent photos. Splash day is not far away!

October 31 presented a real treat to Vineyard Haven Harbor, a WSW breeze and 11-15 knots of wind for a beautiful end-of-fall sail. Elise and I took out Avanti for one last ride as well as a harbor tour of the magnificent sailboats--large and small--that are moored there. [RRYC was founded in 1936 in Irvington, Virginia, and in 1983 established the Rappahannock River Sailing Association. The first Rappahannock Cup races elevated the reputation of sailing in the Rappahannock River and its creeks, and ever since the club has maintained a strong racing program and an active cruising schedule. Located just five minutes from the RRYC, Hills Quarter is a 475-acre master-planned golf community featuring the award-winning King Carter links, named "Best New Affordable Public Course," by _Golf Digest_ in 2006.

If you've ever been boatstruck by a beautiful boat, then the [Herreshoff Marine Museum](http://www.herreshoff.org/) is your kind of place. Filled with boats of all shapes and sizes, mementos and photos, it's enough to make you wish you had been alive back in the eighteen to nineteen hundreds during the golden age of sail design when Nathaniel Herreshoff and the Herreshoff family was beautifying the world with sleek and breath-taking creations.

It all got started in 1878 when John Brown Herreshoff, a blind boatbuilder from Bristol, Rhode Island, who had been in business since 1863, went into partnership with his younger brother, Nathanael Green Herreshoff, a naval architect and steam engineer. The name of their new firm was the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.

In a contest with boats of the same length, Herreshoff's launch was declared a unanimous winner and the monopoly was broken.

Reliance bested her America's Cup challenger, Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock III, designed by William Fife, in all three races they competed, and promptly retired undefeated. Reportedly the largest gaff-rigged cutter ever built, she measured 201 feet long and the tip of her mast was 199 feet above the water--the height of a 20-story building.

Her total sail area of 16,156.6 sq ft was the equivalent of eight 12 meter class yachts and needed a crew of 64. Understandably, she was referred to as a 'freak.' After her brief career, she was sold for scrap in 1913.

All sailors with a boat 22 feet and up were invited to race in the 2010 Vineyard Cup in Vineyard Haven, MA, July 16-18, but it was the locals who made it happen. The Holmes Hole Sailing Association (HHSA) which races in Vineyard Haven harbor and local cruisers, such as Gannon & Benjamin's Juno which won the gaff rig class, contributed nearly half of the 69 boats which raced for prizes in a variety of classes.

Visiting skippers and crews made their mark as well in the event which was held in Vineyard Sound. According to the posted results for corrected time, veteran racer Bob Lurie of Lexington skippered Mischief, an Alerion 26, to a first place finish in Class 1 in each of the three races, to win overall honors for the regatta.

Second overall was Serenity, a C&C 29 skippered by Benjamin Block of Barrington, R. I. Third was Latonka, a sleek, wooden one-design sailed by Geoff Gibson of Vineyard Haven.

In Class 2, Holmes Holer Stephen Besse, in his J/120 Apres, captured top honors. Jim Lengle of Portsmouth, R. I., with Top Cat, an Alerion Express 38 yawl was second. Tom Tetrault of Georgetown was second with Facet, a Bristol 355.

First place overall in Class 3 went to David Nesbitt, who skippered Epic, a Hinterholler 25, and made his trek from Melbourne, Florida, with his crew worth the effort.

The event is Sail Martha's Vineyard's big annual fund raiser for programs dedicated to teaching island youth how to sail and to inform them of their maritime heritage. Organizers were rewarded with competitive races held under warm, sunny skies, while consistent breezes powered the racers throughout most of the weekend. After each day's races, skippers and crew gathered under a big white tent at the public dock at Owen Park to eat, party to live music and recount the day's action.

Four years ago I got caught up in a boat building saga that continues to this day. Called [The Arctic Tern Project](http://members.shaw.ca/pgron/ArcticTern.htm), it chronicles Peter Gron of Gabriola Island, BC, Canada's odyssey which began in the autumn of 2004 when he built a boat shed and started building the 23' sloop Arctic Tern.

The Arctic Tern is of composite construction using the "Stitch-and-Glue" technique and was designed by Sam Devlin of Olympia Washington.

Since then I have been faithfully tuning in at the start of each month for the latest report on his project. Peter has persisted through cuts and bruises, missteps and miss-cuts, winter and summer to where he can now see the finish line.
